SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH

  • Go Kids, Inc. 885 Moro Drive Gilroy, CA, 95020 United States (map)

Mental health encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social well-being, profoundly influencing our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It plays a crucial role in managing stress, fostering meaningful connections, and making informed decisions.

Both mental and physical health are integral aspects of overall well-being. Understandably, conditions like depression can heighten the risk of various physical health issues, including diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Simultaneously, enduring physical ailments can increase susceptibility to mental illnesses.

It is important to note that mental illnesses affect a significant portion of Californians. Approximately 1 in 7 adults in California experience a mental illness, with 1 in 26 facing severe mental health challenges that hinder daily functioning. Disturbingly, 1 in 14 children confront emotional disturbances that impair their involvement in family, school, and community activities.

Data reveals an increase in reports of serious psychological distress among California adolescents and adults between 2016 and 2019. While California's suicide rate is comparatively lower than the national average and the Healthy People 2030 target, variations persist based on gender, race/ethnicity, and county.

By spreading awareness and fostering a better-informed society, we can collectively address the complexities surrounding mental health and advocate for equitable access to comprehensive mental health care.
