Mental Health Awareness Month

  • Go Kids, Inc. 885 Moro Drive Gilroy, CA, 95020 United States (map)

Hey Everyone,

As some of you might know May is Mental Health Awareness Month! During this time, it is important that we look at our mental health as an integral part of our overall health and well-being. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being, and it affects how we think, feel, and behave.

Families can benefit from mental health awareness in many ways:

Early identification and treatment: Mental health problems can manifest at any age, and early identification and treatment are critical. Mental health awareness can help families recognize the signs of mental health disorders in their loved ones and seek appropriate treatment.

Reduction of stigma: Mental health awareness can help reduce the stigma that often surrounds mental disorders, making it easier for families to seek help and support.

Improved communication: Mental health awareness can facilitate better communication within families, helping family members understand each other's experiences, needs, and challenges.

Increased resilience: Mental health awareness can help families build resilience and coping skills, enabling them to better handle life's challenges.

Better overall health outcomes: When mental health is prioritized and managed effectively, it can lead to better overall health outcomes, including improved physical health, better relationships, and increased productivity.

10 Tips to help support mental health:

  1. Practice self-care: Encourage family members to prioritize self-care activities, such as exercise, healthy eating, meditation, and hobbies that bring joy and relaxation.

  2. Foster open communication: Encourage open communication within the family. Create a safe and supportive environment where family members can share their thoughts, feelings, and concerns without fear of judgment.

  3. Seek professional help: If anyone in the family is struggling with mental health complications, encourage them to seek professional help. This can include counseling, therapy, or consulting with your primary care physician.

  4. Connect with support groups: Support groups can provide a sense of community and understanding. Encourage family members to connect with support groups, such as NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) or local mental health organizations.

  5. Learn about mental health: Education is a powerful tool in mental health awareness. Encourage family members to learn more about mental health, including the signs and symptoms of mental disorders, and the available treatment options.

  6. Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness techniques can help reduce stress and anxiety. Encourage family members to practice mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation, yoga or going for a walk.

  7. Create a routine: A daily routine can provide structure and stability, which can be especially helpful during times of stress or uncertainty.

  8. Take breaks from technology: Taking breaks from technology can help reduce stress and improve overall mental health. Encourage family members to unplug and disconnect from technology regularly.

  9. Use mental health apps: There are several mental health apps available that can provide support and resources, such as Headspace, Calm, Happify or a free one, called How We Feel.

  10. Reach out for help: Encourage family members to reach out for help if they are struggling with their mental health. This can include talking to a trusted friend, family member, or mental health professional.
