The Importance of Children's Welfare

  • Go Kids, Inc. 885 Moro Drive Gilroy, CA, 95020 United States (map)

Every two minutes, a child is taken away from their home and placed into foster care. Neglect, often associated with the consequences of poverty, serves as a common driver for child welfare involvement. Sadly, families are frequently torn apart for reasons that could have been prevented had they received support to overcome the effects of poverty, mental illness, and substance use. Furthermore, children of color are disproportionately represented in the child welfare system. To put it into perspective, out of every 1,000 white children in the United States, 5.2 are placed in foster care. However, this number increases to 9.9 for every 1,000 Black children and 16.9 for every 1,000 American Indian/Alaska Native children.

Regrettably, the foster care system often fails to provide children with stability, resulting in unnecessary transitions between foster homes or even placement in institutional settings instead of with families. Although the majority of children do find a permanent family after leaving foster care, there are still too many who "age out" without that support. These children are left without a permanent family or connection to caring adults, leaving them without social, emotional, or financial support. As they strive to become self-sufficient adults, they face numerous obstacles.

At Go Kids, we are dedicated to assisting the families in our care by helping them access affordable or no-cost programs that can contribute to the overall well-being of the family unit while caring for their child/children.
