Children facing poverty and children belonging to marginalized communities often encounter barriers when starting their educational journey. They have limited access to high-quality early development and learning opportunities. Recent data highlights the detrimental impact of this lack of investment and support. In 2019, over 65 percent of 4th and 8th-grade students performed below proficiency in reading and math. Discrimination in schools and biased discipline policies disproportionately affect children of color, LGBTQ children, and children with disabilities, denying them equal opportunities for success and perpetuating the school-to-prison cycle. Additionally, students experiencing homelessness, in foster care, or returning from juvenile detention lack the necessary support, putting them at higher risk of falling behind and dropping out.
Our proposed solution aims to ensure equitable access to high-quality early education and the resources to strengthen support for all children and their families.
